![]() ![]() Hopefully, if someone else is experiencing this same pain with their previously working WireShark, these steps will help. This may work with other versions of Windows (Windows 10, for example) but I have not personally tried it out. The install completed successfully and I was able to run WireShark and capture packets again. Then I downloaded the latest version of WireShark (version 2.2.2). When I installed WireShark, I made sure NOT to select the installation of WinPcap 4.1.3. First, I uninstalled WireShark (and WinPcap 4.1.3, the latest at the time of this writing) and rebooted. When Wireshark reports that it cannot find any interfaces, it means that it could not detect any networks. Feel free to modify these steps if you wish. There are many possible reasons for this problem. I will list exactly what I did but there may be steps that are unnecessary for you. Enough about the failures, here’s to success! I tried running WireShark in compatibility modes for previous version of Windows – to no avail. I then tried going ever further back into the archives of old versions of WireShark. My first attempts involved uninstalling and reinstalling, with reboots before and after. Let me share what I did to restore functionality and my sanity. When I checked Task Manager, a process called dumpcap.exe was not responding and like in the movies, hard to kill. I recently upgraded my instructor workstation and WireShark stopped working. Then download the latest version of Npcap and install it.I am a long time user of WireShark and I frequently use it for demonstrations in my networking classes. I suggest you uninstall WinPcap and Npcap from Control Panel, if it reports either of them, and then remove any Npcap directories in C:\WIndows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64. ![]() Please close all the WinPcap-based applications and run the installer again. On a 64-bit version of Windows, the installer also installs libraries in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Npcap, for the benefit of 32-bit programs. 13 When installing WinPcap 4.1.2 on Windows 7 I receive the following message 'A previous version of WinPcap has been detected on this system and cannot be removed because in use by another application. There's wpcap.dll, which is the DLL that implements the Npcap API (libpcap API, with UN*X-specific APIs removed, Windows-specific APIs added, and some additional APIs), and packet.dll, which is used by wpcap.dll to communicate with the NPF driver that Npcap installs to do packet capture. If not installed in WinPcap compatible mode, the libraries are installed in C:\Windows\System32\Npcap. That option is not necessary for Wireshark Wireshark will work OK with WinPcap (assuming WinPcap itself works on your version of Windows), Npcap installed in WinPcap compatible mode, or Npcap installed not in WinPcap compatible mode. If compatibility mode is not selected, Npcap can coexist alongside WinPcap applications which only know about WinPcap will continue using that, while other applications can choose to use the newer and faster Npcap driver instead. WinPcap compatibility: For applications that don't yet make use of Npcap's advanced features, Npcap can be installed in “WinPcap Compatible Mode.” This will replace any existing WinPcap installation. The Npcap installer has an option for "WinPcap Compatible Mode". it's actually in syswow64 folder (also packet DLL which looks related). While you can avoid this issue by running Wireshark with elevated privileges (e.g. I noticed that when i run the NPCAP installer it will search for wpcap DLL in "c/System32/wpcap.dll" which is not there. This is usually caused by incorrectly setting up permissions related to running Wireshark correctly. WinPcap may have some issues with newer versions of Windows (such as Windows 10), and Npcap should address those issues. I understand that NPCAP is needed to fix the compatibility issue. ![]() What is "wpcap"? If it's WinPcap, it is compatible with Wireshark, as is Npcap. ![]()
